Anjaneri Conservation

Anjaneri Conservation Reserve

Conceptualized in 2013

Designated in 2016

Located in Nashik District, Anjaneri hill is part of the sacred circuit of 5 hills visited by pilgrims. 

The plateau his home to a diversity of flora and fauna including endangered vultures and Ceropegia anjanerica.

Jui Pethe and Amit Tillu have been leading conservation action on this site. Alongwith local youth and Nashik Forest Department, they have protected the wild diversity and are initiated sustainable nature tourism.  

Kas Conservation 

Kas Plateau, World Natural Heritage Site

Nomination process from 2007

Designated in 2012

Since 2012, flower tourism became a major threat to the Kas plateau in Satara district. A public consultation held at Pune by the Rock Outcrop Network helped to brainstorm various aspects of tourism impact.

Studies by Prerna Agarwal, Yatish Lele, Apeksha Patil showed negative impacts of tourism and ways in which they can be limited through local communities' involvement. 

Kas is now managed by Joint forest Managment Committee of villages. Members of RON have actively participated in local actions and regularly given suggestions for tourism managment.

Panchgani tableland

Panchgani tableland is a conservation zone and heritage site within the Panchgani Mahabaleshwar Ecosensitive Zone

Conservation Action continues through intervention of Bombay High Court and Supreme Court

Panchgani tableland is perhaps the best known lateritic plateau of India as it s a famous tourist spot. 

It has been studies since the British period and is home to several endemic plants and some invertebrates. Illegal use of the land for heavy impact activities such as balloon rides, cart driving, racing destroyed large part of the plateau. 

Hema Ramani of Bombay Environmental Action Group is conducting legal advocacy for sustainable management of the land. Bombay High Court has time and again stepped in to support biodiversity conservation.
