Basalt mesa
Outcrops of basalt are seen in various places in the Deccan region which is formed by volcanic activity. In the Western Ghats section in Maharashtra they are in the form of Mesa (an elevated area of land with a flat top and sides that are usually steep cliffs) at higher altitudes.
Microhabitats such as boulders, potholes and shallow depressions are common on basalt mesas.
